Who is behind antikytheramechanism.app

An independent research and outreach project on the oldest known astronomical calculator.

Gaspare Russo — Founder and Project Director

Independent archaeoastronomy researcher based in Syracuse, Sicily. Affiliated with Associazione Arco di Diana APS; ORCID 0009-0005-3198-9346. He conceived and directs this project: the choice of sources, the structure of the calculator, the three-dimensional model and the texts.

Mission

The goal of the project is to make the mechanism compute: using the tooth counts published from the CT scans of the fragments and the astronomical ratios they imply, and compare every pointer with the true position of the Sun and Moon. Visitors see not only what the machine did, but how well it did it — and where it erred.

The second goal is a buildable version: a model with real measurements that schools, museums and makers can reproduce. That part is still in development: see Project status.

Why Syracuse

The project is based in Syracuse, the city of Archimedes and of his father, the astronomer Phidias, and of the mechanical sphere described by Cicero. The historical background is under Conference.

How it was built

The software (gear-ratio engine, ephemerides, 3D model, pages) was developed by Gaspare Russo with the assistance of Claude, Anthropic’s AI, under his direction and verification. Every datum used is cited under Research, with its provenance.

Independence

Independent, self-funded project. The measured data come from the publications cited under Research (Freeth et al. and others).
